What’s Happening in Turkey?

Turkey

  • More than 95 percent of the people in Turkey are Muslims.
  • Turkey has a new president. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan took office in August 2014.
  • Part of Turkey is in Europe and part is in Asia. Last year Turkey opened an underground train tunnel that links the two parts.
  • Read about Christians in Turkey here.
  • Turkey celebrates Republic Day on October 29th. Citizens honor the day in 1923 when Turkey’s leader declared the country a republic after a war for independence. Parades and patriotic performances are part of the celebration.
  • Simit is a favorite food in Turkey. Try this recipe for a small version of the treat.

Mix 1 cup of flour and ¼ tsp. salt. Add 1 tsp. olive oil, 2 tbsp. softened butter, 2 tbsp. warm butter, 4 tsp. milk, and 1 beaten egg. Mix until a ball of dough is formed.

Using flour-coated hands, form the dough into “snakes” about 6 inches long and ½ to ¾ inches wide. Join the ends and pinch together to form circles. Put on a greased cookie sheet, and brush with egg white. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake for 25 minutes at 350 degrees. Makes about 8.

Pray for Turkey and for their new president. Pray that he will rule wisely and fairly, and that everyone in his country will have the opportunity to learn about Jesus and His love for them.
