“In the Beginning”

North Korea

One day Sung-Mi, a 12-year-old girl in North Korea, discovered something scary. It was a book secretly hidden deep in a drawer at her house.

She opened the book to the beginning. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters,” she read.

Sung-Mi was very upset. She had learned at school that there was no God in heaven. People who believed in such a God were often taken away by the police and never heard from again.

Sung-Mi had also been taught that the most important thing in the world was to please her country’s government. Her North Korean friends and neighbors spent a lot of time thinking of ways they could be more useful and loyal to the government.

Sung-Mi thought about how pleased her teachers would be if she told them about the book. But if she reported her discovery, she might never see her parents again.

“What should I do?” she wondered. She realized that she was curious about the God she read about in the book. She really wanted to know more about Him.

Sung-Mi decided to ask her father about the book. She found out that her parents were secret Christians. Her father told her Bible stories and shared the gospel with her. After a time, she trusted in Christ as her Savior.

Sung-Mi is grown up now. She escaped North Korea and lives in a place where she has more freedom to read the Bible and follow Jesus.

Pray for North Koreans who have never seen a Bible and still do not know about the true God in heaven.
