Freedom to Prepare

On July 4th we celebrate our freedom and independence. In the United States, we are thankful for our freedom to worship and to speak about our beliefs.

Richard Wurmbrand was a pastor in Romania in the mid-20th century. At that time, Romania was under communist control, and people were not free to proclaim Christ in public. Pastor Wurmbrand was in prison for a total of 14 years because of his Christian activities.

After he was released, he came to the United States and started the ministry that later became The Voice of the Martyrs. He died in 2001.

The Bible says, “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God’ (Acts 14:22, NIV). Pastor Wurmbrand believed that those who are not having struggles can prepare for harder times now. He had some suggestions for how people in comfortable circumstances can prepare for harder times now.

The following were some of his ideas about preparing for times of hardship:

  • Learn to do without things you don’t need.
  • Read the Bible and stories of brave Christians.
  • Learn to be silent. More souls are won by listening to people than by speaking to them.
  • “It will be too late to start to be holy when you go to heaven.’ Start now; don’t quarrel with people.
  • Learn to be quiet by yourself with no entertainment.
  • Memorize Bible verses.
  • Learn to see the good side of things.
