Islam in School

Turkey

“Some people say that required Muslim religious classes in school don’t happen anymore, but they do.” — A Christian in Turkey

Schools in Turkey teach students about Islam. Non-Muslims are supposed to be able to get excused from the Islam classes. But some Christians say it is difficult to get excused.

Only three non-Muslim religious groups: Greek Orthodox Christians, Armenian Orthodox Christians, and Jews, are allowed to have their own schools, supervised by the government. Other religious groups do not have schools. Their children often go to the mostly Muslim schools.
