The New Jesus Freaks Book
Jesus Freaks: Stories of those who stood for Jesus, the ultimate Jesus Freaks was first published about 20 years ago. The book told the stories of Christians in the past and in recent times whose lives were completely devoted to Christ. Millions of readers read the stories and many learned about persecuted Christians for the first time.
A brand new edition of the book is now available. About one-third of the new book tells stories of Christians who laid down their lives for Christ in the years since the first edition came out.
Todd Nettleton of VOM Radio recently interviewed Michael Tait and Don Pitts about the book. Michael is the lead singer of the Newsboys, formerly of dc Talk. Dan is a manager of dc Talk.
Read part of their interview below (edited for length and clarity).
Todd: The reason we are talking about this now is because there is a new generation of Jesus freaks. Why another book?
Michael: I am going to say, Todd, on behalf of Toby Mac and Kevin Max (also former members of dc Talk), who are not here right now, we are beyond stoked and proud and happy to be a part of something that is eternal. This book has blessed lots of people, but book number two blesses a whole new generation. We are very thankful that God allowed us to come together [with VOM], and our paths to cross.
Dan: I hope it gives kids strength and courage to stand up for what is right when they are in school. It is really hard for a kid to not be made fun of if you don’t go with where the tide is right now. I hope this book gives them courage to say I am going to stand up for what I believe is right, and I am going to trust that God will send friends to me. And if not, I am going to hold on. I can look at these guys [in the Jesus Freaks book] who have come before, and they stood strong. I hope it gives kids courage to walk the path that God has put them on during this time, which I think is really hard for kids.
Michael: We all have tough times, but the true test of character is the person who is sold out to God and is following Him through those tough times. You don’t have to finish the race first, just endure. Just end the race, finish the race. That is what we are called to do, and I think that message is timely now.
Todd: When people read the new version of Jesus Freaks, and they close the book, what do you want them to do?
Michael: I want them, frankly speaking, to make it a part of their daily devotional.
Dan: When you get that pushback, these stories really give you strength and courage.
Michael: It makes me realize these people waited on God and God delivered. They might have lost their life in this time, but they gained their life because we know the real end of the story.
Parents and teachers: The new Jesus Freaks is available here. Please preview the stories before sharing them with younger children.
