Bold Believers in School Print E-mail

When we think about Christians around the world suffering for their faith, we often think about believers who are not allowed to own Bibles or whose churches are burned down. But Christians in non-Christian lands often have struggles in every part of their lives.

Pakistanis in Poverty

Many Christians in Pakistan are very poor. They are forced to take jobs no one else wants. For example, many work at brick factories making bricks for about $5 a week.

Why are Pakistani Christians forced to take low-paying jobs? In many cases they don’t have enough education to get better jobs. Some Christian children and youth have to work to help support their families, and they can’t go to school.

Struggling at School
Often Christian children do go to school, but it’s not always easy to be a Christian student at a public school in a mostly Muslim country. A Pakistani pastor said some Christian students are forced to learn Muslim teachings at school. Muslim students sometimes make fun of them.

Even if they manage to do well in school, Christian students still face many obstacles.

Qandeel
Qandeel is a Christian girl in Pakistan who has worked hard and earned good grades. She would like to become a doctor, but her family cannot afford to send her to medical school.

A medical school in Pakistan will admit students who can’t pay for their own education if they do well on tests. Qandeel received A and A+ grades on school exams.

The school decides which students to accept by a point system. Muslim students get 20 extra points if they memorize the Koran. (The Koran is the Muslim holy book.)

Qandeel wanted 20 points for her knowledge of Christianity, but the school doesn’t give extra points to Christians. She was not admitted to the medical school, even though her grades and test scores were very good.

The case has gone to court, and many Muslims probably disagree with Qandeel’s attempt to get the same privileges as Muslims. Some will not like it if the court rules in her favor.

Please pray for Qandeel and other Christian young people in Pakistan. Ask God to help them stand firm in their Christian faith in times when it is not easy or convenient. Pray their relationship with God will come first in their lives even when daily struggles make demands on their time and energy.
