Romania: Hard Times Print E-mail

Pastor Richard Wurmbrand and his wife Sabina lived in Romania during the time when communists ruled the country. Pastor Wurmbrand spent a total of 14 years in prison for teaching people about Jesus. While he was in prison, his son Mihai struggled to stand up for the truth in his father’s absence. The following story is told in Mihai’s words.

Again I was expelled from school!

My teacher was a communist.

“The Bible is not true,” he said to the class. “Science gives us the answer to all life’s questions.”

Then he told us to write an essay. In the essay, we were to tell why the Bible is false.

“The Bible is true,” I wrote. “Arguments against the Bible are weak. Surely the teacher has not read the Bible. The Bible is in harmony with true science.”

It was not the first time I had been expelled. It would not be the last.

After I was expelled, I would stay out of school for a time. Then I would enroll in a different school.

After awhile, being expelled meant nothing to me. I did not fear it. As a Christian, I would never be able to get a good job anyway as long as the communists were in power. So I felt a great freedom to tell the truth. I had nothing to hang on to but my faith.

The Courage to Speak Up First

Sometimes when I told the truth, it encouraged others who were afraid. One day, a teacher was giving a speech about atheism to my class. He was trying to prove that there is no God.

I stood up.

“Teaching is a big responsibility,” I said as politely as I could manage. “By teaching that there is no God, you may have led many young people astray today. According to the Bible, it would be better for a man to be thrown into the sea with a big stone around his neck than for him to lead believers astray.”

One by one, other students rose up and agreed with me. Soon the whole class stood together. They just needed someone with courage to speak up first.

I guess the school officials didn’t want to expel the whole class, because we weren’t punished that day.

Times of Testing

We suffered daily because we were living for Christ in enemy territory. But as hard as it was for us on the outside, my father was having much worse struggles in prison. And God was helping him pass his tests, too.
