Buddhist beliefs

Buddhists believe that suffering comes from having desires. They try to get rid of desires by following “the Eightfold Path” (rules about “right thinking” and “right works”).

God creates us with desires, and He fulfills those desires. (See Psalm 37:4.) Believers are “more than conquerors” in suffering (Romans 8:37).

Hindu beliefs

Hindus believe in “reincarnation,” the belief that after people die, they come back to life again as other people or animals. “Karma” is the belief that the way someone behaved in a former life determines what they are in their next life. Hindus believe that karma also explains why people suffer.

People are born and die once (Hebrew 9:27). Therefore, it is not possible for suffering to be caused by something they did in other lives. (Read John 9:1-3. What did Christ say about the suffering of the blind man?)

Muslim beliefs

Most Muslims believe that all things, both good and bad, are the will of Allah (Koran Chapter 9:51).

“In all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28, NIV). “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights” (James 1:17, NIV).

Secular humanist beliefs

Humanists believe that much suffering is caused by ignorance and wrong beliefs. They believe people can improve their lives through education and science. Humans can save themselves from their problems.

The Bible does not say that Christians will be free from suffering during their lives on earth. However, Jesus offers victory over the ultimate problems: sin and death. (See 1 Corinthians 15:54-56 and John 16:33.) He also promises to be with us always (Matthew 28:20).
