In a previous post Sallie shared her story of her father’s time in prison. Read an update to her story below.
A worker from The Voice of the Martyrs recently visited Sallie and talked to her. Sallie is now 14 years old. Her father has been released after nine years in prison. Read the worker’s report below.
Sallie was 5 or 6 years old when her father was arrested. At first his family thought he was only called to the police station for questioning, and Sallie waited in the doorway for him to come home that night. Instead, it would be four months until the family found out what happened to him.
The family kept attending church while he was gone. The neighbors were too frightened to get involved, fearing they’d also be arrested for having contact with the family. Sallie’s grandparents helped the family with food to survive.
After her father was arrested, the school teacher changed her attitude toward Sallie and treated her worse. Ten of her classmates were the children of policemen, and they we’re especially harsh to Sallie. They were warned by their parents not to play with the Christian girl.
The family did not know when Sallie’s father would be released. It was just two days before he got out that they learned he’d be coming home. They didn’t know what time he would arrive, so they didn’t wait at the bus station. He came home, and Sallie did not recognize him at first. They stayed up the whole night talking.
Now he is under house arrest for five years.
When her father speaks of prison, Sallie is so sad for him, because she really loves him. He’s changed, and he is sick a lot and not strong like before. He is in the church choir, and is the group leader for the 30- to 40-year olds. Sallie’s grandparents go to the church, and they study the Bible together with her.
Sallie said, “Jesus died on the cross, so my father being in prison is something very small compared to Jesus’ work for us. Even if being a Christian is very difficult, I don’t want to leave it. We live for him, because he died for us.”
